Greed… a tendency that seems small on the surface but creates great turmoil in life. Often, we don’t even recognize it because it hides behind our desires.
What exactly is greed? It’s simply an endless craving — “I want more… and more…” A person who owns a bicycle wants a scooter. Once he gets the scooter, he wants a car. After getting a car, he wants a bigger one — and then something “special” in that too. This cycle never ends.
We think, “Once this desire is fulfilled, I’ll be at peace.” But the truth is, as soon as one desire is fulfilled, another is born. During studies, we wish for good marks, then admission to a good college. In college, we want to top the class… then a good job… then more money… then marriage… then children… then their future… and in between, countless small and big desires keep chasing us.
We keep filling our lives with comforts — houses, decorations, air conditioners, cars, gadgets… But do we ever stop to ask — was all this really necessary?
We justify it — “In today’s world, these things are essential…” “Everyone is doing it…” But why these justifications? Because somewhere deep inside, greed has taken root. We often disguise our greed as “family needs” or “children’s future.” But in truth, it’s the same stubbornness found in a child. A child wants a toy… gets it… plays for a while… and then forgets it. We too keep running after desires.
Like when we go to buy something in the market, and end up buying a “better” version for a small difference — that’s not a difference, it’s the effect of greed.
It’s like dangling a carrot in front of a rabbit to make it run — we too keep chasing that carrot endlessly. But if we pause for a moment and realize — this is greed, and it must be controlled — life can change.
True happiness lies not in “getting more,” but in “being content with what we have.” When we learn satisfaction, life truly becomes beautiful and peaceful.
